  • 1 packet dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon rosemary or thyme (optional) For additional flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or flatbread.
  • Place the dough on a baking sheet, brush it with olive oil, and sprinkle with herbs if desired.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let it cool before slicing.

Notes

This bread is versatile and can be paired with Mediterranean dishes. To store leftovers, wrap in plastic wrap or foil and keep in a cool, dry place. For longer storage, freeze portions in a zip-top bag.
