Ingredients

For the sushi rice

  • 1 cup sushi rice Short-grain rice that is sticky when cooked.
  • 1.25 cups water Used to cook the sushi rice.
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar Enhances the flavor of the rice.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Balances the acidity of the vinegar.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Seasoning for the rice.

For the toppings

  • 1 avocado, sliced Creamy texture complements the dish.
  • 8 oz imitation crab meat or real crab meat Savory protein option.
  • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced Fresh crunch to add texture.
  • Nori sheets to taste cut into strips For wrapping or topping.
  • Sesame seeds to taste for garnish Optional topping for added flavor.
  • Soy sauce to taste for serving Used as a dipping sauce.

Instructions

Preparing the sushi rice

  • Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Combine the rice and water in a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  • Cover and simmer for 18 minutes, then remove from heat and allow it to sit covered for another 10 minutes.

Seasoning the rice

  • In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved.
  • Once the rice is finished cooking, fluff it with a fork and gently fold in the vinegar mixture.

Assembling the bowls

  • Place a portion of sushi rice in each bowl.
  • Top the rice with avocado slices, crab meat, and cucumber slices.
  • Add strips of nori and sprinkle sesame seeds on top for garnish.
  • Serve with soy sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store the sushi rice and toppings separately to maintain freshness. Leftovers should be consumed within 2 days. You can also customize with additional toppings like diced mango or spicy mayo.
